Chris (they/he/yo/tbd/🤔)

This is the personal website of Dr. Christopher “Chris” Gregory Roberts. Chris works at The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). At RISD holds a Schiller Family Assistant Professorship in Race in Art and Design. He teaches in the Theory, History of Art and Design Department as well as the Experimental and Foundation Studies Division.

Chris is a black scholar from a working-class family in Baltimore who’s hardly home but is most certainly reppin’ at all times. Their scholarly practice is interested in unraveling black geographies of memory and forgetting as they emanate amidst the architecture(s) and aesthetic(s) of monuments/maps/archives/museums.

As a teacher, he engages his pedagogical work with an ethos rooted in the traditions of Ethnic Studies and Black Studies. An experienced grassroots organizer outside the halls of academia, they utilize that background to advocate for and mentor those most marginalized by the university system (students of color, queer students, disabled students, first-gen students, pell-eligible students, undocumented students, and more).

I’ll post scholarly things here. But I’ll post other things here too. So, yeah.

I dig hella random stuff. Really hoping to build out my hobbies (like walking) more and be a well rounded person. I’m also gonna get back on stage… more poetry, more writing, and performance art to come.

I have a morbid sense of humor that I think is pretty wry. I’m hella serious about the things I believe in. In the process of learning who I am while navigating the rocky waters of devastating grief with a small but mighty crew of wonderful people.

I work in the academy, but I’m so much more than an academic.
